“Hey Jake, look at this.”

The next morning, we were back up north, entering the human world with more knowledge than we had the day before. By the time we woke up, there was a large file resting in my email—all the known information that we had about David, courtesy of the rest of the pack.

It also included a list of acquaintances, which were all humans that regularly interacted with him. Since werewolves only showed their canine forms during the full moon, the majority of them lived rather normal lives, having jobs and hobbies that were similar to other humans.

We decided to divide and conquer in the interest of time. Piper and Andie went to check out the site of his employment, which was an insurance office outside the city of Providence. Emma and Cleo went to meet several of his friends, most of whom revolved around a golf club out in the suburbs. Mona and Amara decided to check into any remaining family connections, though all that remained were several cousins that lived throughout the northeast.

That left Stella and me to check out his house, which was only about fifteen minutes away from the place he worked.

When we got there, the place had already been thoroughly searched. Ransacked was probably the best way to put it, as the pack had searched high and low for any sign of David’s whereabouts. There was clothing all over the floor, documents spread out across the bed, and even a thorough inspection of his pantry (which had created quite the mess).

“Why would they have gone after his food supply?” asked Stella, picking up a discarded bag of sugar from the floor. “I don’t think they’re going to get any clues about where he went by what kind of sugar he buys.”

“The pack is desperate,” I said, scanning the documents on the kitchen table. “I half-expected the house to look worse.”

Wherever this man went, he didn’t go willingly. At least, that was the only conclusion I could come to as I saw every bit of personal documentation, including a driver’s license, a golf club ID card, and even a passport was left on the table. Two credit cards joined them, neither of which had expired yet.

“I’m thinking he didn’t go by choice,” I said, holding up the credit card. “Who leaves without having access to money?”

“Do you think Samael could have killed him too?” she asked. “We already know he likes to tidy up loose ends.”

“Anything’s a possibility right now,” I said, looking for other documents. “By the way this is presented, it’s like he could have been taken in the middle of the night. Though, it does beg one question. If Samael wanted him dead, why not just slit his throat like he did with Pascal? Why take him?”

Stella thought about it for a moment before she shrugged. “Maybe he didn’t want to alert the humans to a murder? Maybe he thought it would get more attention?”

“Something tells me Samael doesn’t care about that,” I said.
